Continuous glucose monitoring can be a valuable tool for people who have elevated A1c levels, but have relatively normal blood glucose levels when they are checking. It also gives a more accurate picture into what is happening with blood glucose level trends after exercise, after meals and when you are sleeping.
Continuous glucose monitoring consists of wearing a special monitor for 72 hours which measures blood glucose every five minutes during that timeframe. The person wearing the monitor records food intake and exercise during the test period. After removing the monitor, the data is downloaded onto a computer to be organized and graphed. Trained diabetes educators interpret the data and graph information to provide valuable information on blood glucose levels and trends. The data is reviewed with your physician and recommendations for changes in therapy can be made based on the overall data and blood glucose trends uncovered by the test.
